But where exactly is Montreuil-sur-Mer located?

Montreuil-sur-Mer is a town located in the north of France on the Opal Coast. It is located near Berck sur Mer and our residence in Camiers Sainte-Cécile. If its official name is indeed "Montreuil", it is more commonly called "Montreuil sur Mer" to differentiate it from its Parisian counterpart.

a little bit of history

Philippe II Auguste built a powerful castle at the beginning of the 13th century. Today, the remains of this construction can still be seen in the Citadel enclosure. A fortified gateway and several towers facing the Canche estuary, created to protect the old port of Montreuil.

The king also built a 5-kilometre long ring of ramparts to protect the city. The rampart of the time encompassed the upper and lower town. The succession of events and the king have meant that today the ramparts are 3km long and now have a half-moon entrance, a powder magazine and an arsenal built by Vauban.

In the footsteps of Victor Hugo

In 1837, the most famous French writer stopped briefly in Montreuil. A place he would remember years later, when writing his novel "Les Misérables".

This literary particularity is the pride of the people of Montreuil. Since 1996, 500 volunteers have been donning the costumes of their ancestors and those of the characters in the novel every year. The Les Misérables sound and light show in Montreuil-sur-mer is an institution. A reference show where fiction and reality are mixed, and a moving human story, in the mysterious setting of the citadel. The heritage department regularly offers the theme "In the footsteps of Victor Hugo" for guided tours dedicated to individuals during the school holidays.

Montreuil sur Mer is today a town of pretty streets, churches and chapels to discover. The town is also home to the Citadel Museum, a former fortified castle: a must-see when visiting Montreuil! If you want to see one of the emblematic places of the city of the ramparts, go and see the Saint-Firmin cave.

At the Maison du Tourisme et du Patrimoine, immerse yourself in the adventure of Les Misérables, during a 7-stage tour of the city: visit the Montreuil tourist office website to find out more.
